(This event, opening November 23, is held in three acres of old-world exhibit halls in San Francisco’s legendary Cow Palace — which have been remade into the winding lanes, treasure-laden shops, pubs, tearooms, restaurants, music halls and stages of 19th Century Victorian London.) For several weekends prior to the Fair, these volunteers all, head to Oceana’s campus to attend mandatory meetings and pertinent workshops, in order to obtain by Fair time, an irrefutable aura of Victorian citizenship. This is the fourth year the high school has served as the Fair’s classroom and rehearsal space.

Miss Robin Driskill was among the vendors. From her shop in Vallejo, she makes purses and bags all year long, but for the Great Dickens Christmas Fair, her specialty is the reticule. A reticule is a small drawstring decorated bag, a frippery for the lady who relies on her servant to carry anything of actual weight or largeness. Once the Fair actually begins, Miss Driskill announced she will put all reticules aside and work at the full-spirits bar, Mad Sal’s Dockside Ale House.
