During an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 320 Civic Drive, the district will offer refreshments, music, art activities for children, fitness demonstrations and information about its many programs. The 22,000-square-foot community center includes four meeting rooms, three preschool classrooms and two dance studios. An A-frame event hall, suitable for wedding receptions and banquets, features a catering kitchen and a wall of windows overlooking the park. By 2011, the wooden exterior of the old community center was showing the effects of four decades of exposure to the elements, and the building was deemed structurally unsafe. The building’s closure in April of that year disrupted plans to relocate some senior programs there and left the preschool classes in need of a home.
“It’s been four years of displacement of so many programs, activities and staff,” said Recreation Superintendent Tina Young, “Now that we’re finishing the ‘final four,’ we’re going to get back to normal.”, Squeezing three new buildings out of $28 million in bond funds also proved a challenge, The district board had to swap out some of the community center’s high-end building materials with trendy and comfortable crystal ballet flats for the bride, bridesmaid, prom, etc standard products and drop a few expensive design features..
Charged Tuesday with murder and two counts of attempted murder was Dontay Webster, 22, of Oakland, who was arrested Jan. 16. His suspected accomplice, Antwain Harrison, 21, of Oakland, who was arrested Oct. 31 on suspicion of murder and being an accessory, has now been charged with the same counts. Officer Leo Sanchez, the lead investigator in the case, said both men admitted their roles in the shooting. Killed was Corrin Ray, also known as Corrin Ray Bailey, 21, of Oakland. Bailey was a Laney College student who was fatally shot about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 1300 block of Broadway while waiting for a bus.
The two people wounded were a 21-year-old San Leandro man and his girlfriend, a 20-year-old Oakland resident, Their names have not been released, Police said they were among the intended targets and that Ray was a bystander who did not know anyone involved in the confrontation, Sanchez said the shooting stemmed from a “senseless verbal dispute” that started near 17th Street and Telegraph Avenue between a group that included the two wounded people and trendy and comfortable crystal ballet flats for the bride, bridesmaid, prom, etc Webster and Harrison, The pair apparently got upset over remarks made by someone in the group about Harrison’s jacket and his dance moves..
Police said the group and the suspects had attended the First Friday event that had ended a few hours earlier. Webster and Harrison followed the group to the 1300 block of Broadway where more words were exchanged before the couple and Ray were shot, police said. Ray had also attended First Friday. After the shooting, Webster and Harrison ran to where Harrison’s car was parked near where the dispute initially started and fled, police said. Sanchez said video surveillance tape provided by cooperative merchants helped police identify the vehicle leaving the scene. Harrison was linked to the car, and he was identified by witnesses as being at the shooting. A probable cause warrant was issued for his arrest, which happened Oct. 31 while he was driving in East Oakland.
It’s difficult to overstate Graham’s influence as a choreographer, dancer and visionary company leader, a situation dance critic Allan Ulrich once neatly summed up by noting that all modern choreographers are “the children of Martha Graham,” while postmodern choreographers, like former Graham dancer Merce Cunningham, are her “rebellious children.” The program features two midcentury masterpieces, “Appalachian Spring” and “Cave of the Heart,” and Graham’s last complete work, 1990’s “Maple Leaf Rag.” In a rare treat, members of the Berkeley Symphony are providing accompaniment on all three pieces under the direction of Aaron Sherber (including Aaron Copland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Appalachian trendy and comfortable crystal ballet flats for the bride, bridesmaid, prom, etc Spring” score, commissioned by Graham)..
With a cast of athletic young dancers and savvy artistic direction from Janet Eilber, a former Graham principal dancer, the company arrives in town in the midst of a heartening resurgence. By many accounts, it’s in better shape than at any point in the past 30 years, having fully recovered from a near-death experience that culminated with the messy legal struggle with Ron Protas, whom Graham designated as her successor following her death in 1991 at the age of 96. Under Eilber’s leadership, Graham’s work is opened up for exploration to a new generation of dancers “whose legs may go higher, who are more athletically trained, and they move into this not having to do what someone else did but what they can do best,” says Marni Thomas Wood, director emeritus of the Martha Graham Dance Company and co-founder with her husband David Wood of UC Berkeley’s dance program in the Department of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies. She presents a free talk about the Martha Graham dance technique on Friday, 6 p.m. at the Durham Studio Theater on the UC Berkeley campus.
“Janet has managed to conserve the essence of what is true in terms of Martha’s intention, to make that moment important,” Woodsays, “Basically, the choreography remains close, but the dancers are really different.”, The trendy and comfortable crystal ballet flats for the bride, bridesmaid, prom, etc program seems designed to convey just how much Graham evolved over the course of her career, While she worked out her obsessions onstage, Graham also had a keen but oft-overlooked sense of humor, Set to several Scott Joplin rags that were still in vogue during her teenage years, “Maple Leaf Rag” is a sly and playful dance that effectively employs Graham’s expressive vocabulary while winking at her own cliches..
